You have built your website and everything is running the way you intended it to. You have worked tirelessly to create products for your customers to buy. And yet, the sales are not what you'd like them to be.
Sound familiar?
We all joined numerous groups at Yahoo and while we have created some great friendships, our sales are barely paying for the website space we created. You've seen the ads in all the groups. Most of the subject lines read : "AD- My newest set is ready for you to buy..." But these ads are repeated on so many lists, most people simply look over them. We spend hours setting up the ads and sending messages to all our lists.
We need more traffic!
There are numerous ways to increase traffic to your website. You can advertise in the groups (if anyone has the time to read 50 ads a day), advertise in the newspaper, post in a blog, social network like MySpace, create your own mailing list, submit your site to the search engines, and many others. The best method is word of mouth, but for that to work you need people to have be on your website in the first place in order to pass the word on to other people.
Let's look at the methods:
Yahoo Groups - great for finding persons with similar interests, target market, and convenient. Drawbacks - hundreds of ads just like yours are being posted each day. Most readers will pass over the ads most of the time because they simply don't have the time to visit EVERY site advertised.
Newspaper - Great to let your neighbors and co-workers know about your website, maybe get a few phone calls from a few others who share your interest, and good for getting your name in front of people. Drawbacks - limited target traffic, no guarantee the readers will visit once the paper is thrown out, and MONEY...lots of money!
Blog posts - Blogging is great, but just like your website, you need traffic to keep people coming back to read about your updates!
My Space - Ditto for traffic...just like your blog and your website.
Your own mailing list - OK, need I repeat here? You have to get the visitors to your website first in order to get them to sign up for your mailing list. Again, this comes back to traffic, and we have the problem with potential customers who don't have the time to visit every time you send an update.
Search Engines - Well, we have a no-brainer here too. First you need to rate high on the search engines to enable people to see your site. This also comes back to traffic. Some weight is given to your keywords and the content on your site as it relates to the search key. But, the more popular your website is, the more traffic you have, the higher your rating is on the search engine!

What is a Link Exchange? Simply - you surf other members sites and in exchange earn traffic to your website. This takes some time to do, but it will guarantee more traffic to your site. Maybe that won't generate sales from every person who visits, but it will put your name out there for when they do decide to purchase.
There are many Link Exchange sites to join. I have added six here. If we spend as much time surfing to generate free hits as we do writing the ads for Yahoo, we can increase our traffic right away!
